In this household, a flower isn't just a "flower." It's a "bearded iris," or a "red camelia," or a "California poppy." Dahrius is already a pretty decent botanist around town; Ranier is starting to learn and is always excited when he puts an object and its name together.
Yesterday Ranier, having already eaten his dinner, came up to the rest us finishing our meal and announced "California poppy!" We smiled and asked if he had seen a California poppy, and he seemed to agree, saying "California poppy" again firmly. He then circled around the table to mommy and said loudly, "California nana!" We looked at each other a bit puzzled, about to correct him or ask for clarification, when it suddenly dawned on us that he had made a joke! He wasn't saying "California poppy." He was saying "California papi!" And so of course there had to be a "California nana!"
And I have to say, he seemed to understand that he had made a joke. I have a feeling that dinner conversations are going to involve a lot of laughing with these two jokester boys in the house.
