Re: Dad (Papi/Phil)'s 60th birthday!!!

We had a special treat late July with Megan's dad (Papi) 60th birthday celebration here in Berkeley. An added surprise for dad was that everyone else in the family also came. We had lots of walks and hikes, exploring, good local, fresh food to eat, and much fun being together!!

On the first day, Josh, Joanna, the grandparents and Megan and the boys went for a fun hike/walk along the Berkeley paths to Codornices park. Josh carried Ranier, and we searched for blackberries along the way for Papi's birthday cake the next day.

A friendly gato (above). Josh and Dahrius tried out the famous slide at Codornices park. WHEEEE!!!!

Nana let Ranier feed himself here. He was quite pleased!
At breakfast, the boys had great fun eating fruit with Papi outside on the deck.

We took a hike one day in nearby Tilden park, with lovely (though warm for us, upper 70s) weather. Afterwards, we picniced in the Botanical Gardens.

Then we went for a ride on the steam trains!!!!!!!!!

For Papi's birthday, we had a great dinner all together on the deck, then I made an almond cake with fresh berries on top (including the blackberries we collected the previous day). The cake also accurately had 60 candles, which Dahrius helped him blow out!!!!!!!!!!!

The next day some of us took a trek to Sausalito and watched the boats go by.

What does this mean?? Shall we get his Duke hat out, as well?

We took a lovely hike one day to Muir woods. We left foggy, cool Berkeley for the jaunt in the redwoods. It was also foggy and cool there when we started, but the sun burned off during the day (as it tends to do), and we got some stunning views of nearby Mt. Tam and other spots.

Back at home Nana took the boys for a nice walk in the neighborhood and played with chalk on the front sidewalk.

Ranier, for size reference...
A couple of days we made it to SF to meet up with Yalda and kids (cousins Chloe and Walker). We had great fun running around Yerba Buena Gardens, looking at fountains, riding on the carousel. Another day we met up and saw the Frida Kahlo exhibit at SFMOMA. The kids didn't really cooperate much at the museum show, but it was still fun.

Riding BART to SF.
Back home again--the boys and mom in blue!
