Snow!
A scant three days after the previous post regarding early daffodils, we received our very first snow of the season. Check that, it's the very first snow we've gotten since we moved into this house three winters ago! It didn't last long, and Dahrius, though he liked it, was in no shape to be playing in it, so we'll have to wait till next time to do the sledding/snowman-building/etc.

DAHRIUS

Holiday Travels
Well, we're back in NC, after a fantastic (if occasionally tiring) holiday trip to see both families. I already posted one pic from Berkeley, but here's another one, with Chloe and Dahrius both enjoying the view above everyone....

We also somehow managed to organize ourselves sufficiently to take a family picture WITH the kids.

We all had a great time in the Bay Area, and it was particularly nice that Dahrius was able to play with the children of some of our friends, in addition of course with his great buddies and cousins, Chloe and Walker.
After that, we were off to Mexico, via Phoenix. We got to Phoenix with no problem, but we had failed to account for the fact that SW Airlines does not transfer bags to other carriers. Our flight was late getting in, and by the time we picked up our luggage at baggage claim and stood in the ridiculously slow US Airways line, we were too late for our connection to San Carlos, Mexico. There is only one flight a day, so we were stuck. Fortunately, there were four empty seats the next day, so we were rebooked on that flight. And fortunately much of Megan's family (mom's side) lives in Phoenix, so we were eventually able to reach Megan's aunt Maureen and she picked us up. But first, we needed Dahrius to take a nap, and we found one of the only benches in the airport without arms...

In the end, we had a really nice time at Aunt Maureen's, and we got to see some more of the family, including Uncle Bill (who surprised Dahrius with a toy train), Great-Grandma Fish, and a new cousin, Gabby.
We got to the airport three hours before our flight the next day. The airline complained about our photocopied birth certificate for Dahrius, but they eventually gave us a resolution to the problem. Then we discovered the flight was 1.5 hours late. Sigh. It was naptime again, so we waited outside of the security checkpoint since we found a nice bench. We checked our flight status every 20 minutes or so, but there was no change. We finally woke Dahrius to get through security right around the time that our flight was supposed to originally be leaving (but 1.5 hours before the rescheduled time), and as we walked past the departures board, I noticed that our flight now claimed to be on time! Megan somehow convinced the security person to let us cut in front, and sure enough, we just barely made it onto the flight. It turns out that they "found" another plane to replace the delayed one, but they did not make an announcement to that effect to the whole airport! Another couple also just barely made the plane, and the plane that was supposed to only have 1 extra seat had more like 8. It seems reasonable to assume that there were a number of very pissed off passengers in the Phoenix airport later that day, presumably with their luggage in San Carlos. US Airways (aka America West) sucks. And I guess you should never dally away from your actual gate.
Having survived all of that nonsense, the rest of the rip, both in Mexico and Tucson, was pretty calm. San Carlos was lovely. Here are some pics at or near the house...

Dahrius even braved a short stint on the kayak... perhaps the fact that Bella (Aaron's dog) was also kayaking for the first time encouraged him....?

We managed to get in two great hikes to Scorpion Canyon, nearby. The tallest barrel cactus we've ever seen and very cool palm groves, in addition to magnificent colored-rock canyonlands, highlighted the treks.

We said goodbye to Josh, Aaron, and Jojo on Jan 1 and stayed one more night in San Carlos with Nana. We were rewarded with an absolutely spectacular sunset...
We had a reasonably easy drive north to Tucson (the worst was the one-hour wait at the border), and then it was all trains (!) all the time for the next few days. We found time for a hike or two, and lots of great food and time spent with family and friends.

We miss everyone already! Megan is going to be traveling a lot this month, mostly to and from job interviews in Washington State, so it will be a busy time. But after that we are expecting to hunker down a bit and prepare ourselves mentally and otherwise for Dahrius' sibling!
Happy New Year!
